3 Ways Prescription Drug Rehab Can Save Your Life

3 ways prescription drug rehab could save your lifePrescription drug abuse is more than a problem faced by a few young adults experimenting recreationally. Adults 50 years and older are increasingly using prescription drugs for non-medical purposes according to a study by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). In particular, women between the ages of 60 to 64 showed the most dramatic increase. The study also pointed out that both older men and women were taking these drugs to provide relief for both physical and emotional issues. Their declining physical health coupled with increased stress and depression due to changing life patterns were the most prevalent reasons given for self-medicating.

An Example of Prescription Drug Abuse

Having worked in physically challenging jobs for his entire life, he knew retirement would involve some aches and pains. However, he was not prepared for how significant his physical discomfort was. Having always been independent and active, he relied on his positive attitude to help him get out of bed each morning despite consistent pain. Resistant to the idea of using drugs, he tried hot and cold compresses and gentle exercise, but the pain continued to progress.

After several months he finally relented and started taking over-the-counter pain relievers. He found himself taking a surprisingly large amount of these pain relievers while still getting out of the house less and less and sitting at home being unproductive and lonely. Unable to shake the depression he could feel creeping into his life, he decided to go to the doctor. His doctor prescribed a pain reliever and an anti-depressant. Although he was still hesitant to turn to prescription drugs, his doctor advised that he take the medication as prescribed for a short period of time and see if it works.

While taking the drugs, he felt free from pain and less depressed. However, he began suffering from a side effect of these drugs, insomnia. He called his primary care physician who suggested a medicated sleep aid. He had gone from being a person who rarely even took an aspirin to what he referred to as “a walking drug store.” His medications became his source of comfort and relief, and the slippery slope towards dependence and abuse had begun.
